Swordtember 10: Vagabond’s Cane
A legendary cursed weapon… that wanderers might find to be a blessing.
This one was really really fun! I immediately went to a place with the prompt "banished" of an eternal wanderer, never able to make a home somewhere. I really love when mechanics and narrative work together and i think i did that fairly well with this curse. The fact that the curse is not breakable with a dispel curse spell, but a player choice to convince someone else to take on the burden is really fun in my mind.
I think this could be a really fun item to center a mysterious NPC around, and a decent punishment if you have some murder-hobos at your table. "Willingly" taking on the curse is up to interpretation, but I'm of the mind that the effects of the curse must be fully explained to any prospective wielder.
Vagabond’s Cane
Weapon (Rapier), Legendary (Requires Attunement)
This cane sword grants a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls. While attuned, you do not need to sleep and are immune to gaining points of exhaustion from forced marches. You can benefit from a short or long rest while walking, so long as the duration of the rest is uninterrupted by any other strenuous activity.
This blade has 10 charges. While holding it, you can use an action to expend 3 or more of the sword’s charges to cast one of the following spells from it: Create Food and Water (3 charges), Find the Path (6 charges), Freedom of Movement (4 charges), Passwall (5 charges)
The cane regains 1d6+4 expended charges daily at dawn.
Curse: This weapon is cursed and attuning to it extends the curse to you. At the end of each 24 hour period, you stay in the same location, you must make a Wisdom saving throw. The DC starts at 10 and increases by 1 for every additional 24 hours you stay in the location. If you fail, you gain a point of exhaustion that cannot be removed until you travel at least eight miles from the spot where the exhaustion was gained. If you return to a location where you have gained a point of exhaustion from this curse in less than 30 days, you immediately regain a point of exhaustion and the DC starts at the integer which you had when you left the location.
While you are alive, or until the curse is broken, the cane teleports to your hand in 1d4 hours when removed. This curse can only be broken by a Wish spell, or if another creature willingly takes on the curse and the cane.
