Swordtember 6: Rimeglider
Because who doesn’t want to snowboard on a giant blade?
Day 6 of Swordtember, nearly closing out the week! It’s a bit exhausting but I’ve settled into a good rhythm. The prompt was “snow“ which strangely gave me a lot of trouble. I didn’t want to do something basic and just go with a weapon that dealt cold damage. Luckily, as I was just going about my day I was struck with the sudden thought of a snowboard sword. It’s a bit silly, and more than a little dungeon-punk-y but I don’t think it’s too out of place in a world with magic.
I can just imagine a troupe of arctic scouts using these to ambush unsuspecting down-mountain from them. Perhaps I’ll design an npc statbloock for such a humanoid in the future.
Rimeglider
Weapon (Greatsword), Uncommon
This greatsword generates a five-foot square of two-foot deep powdered snow between itself and a surface when it is less than a foot above that surface. This snow is difficult terrain that melts and evaporates in 6 seconds after the sword is absent. When you move, you may drag the sword behind you, creating a trail of difficult terrain until the start of your next turn.
If you place the sword on the ground and speak its command word while either of your feet are placed on either of its oblong divots, your foot magically adheres to that divot. There is a second command word to detach one or both feet. You may “mount” the blade as if it were a creature.
Though you must still pedal with one foot to move, on a level surface you treat the speed of the blade as 15 feet. Treat the speed of the Blade as 0 feet when moving uphill. While moving downhill with both feet on the divots, treat the speed of the blade as 180 feet.
If you have moved at least 15 feet downhill, as a bonus action, you can make a DC 13 Athletics or Acrobatics check to jump and slice your enemy while mounted on the blade. If you succeed, you can make an attack roll at advantage.
